Zanskar Information,Kargil,Jammu And Kashmir
Zanskar is the most remotest and most isolated valley of Ladakh. It lies a distance of about 20 kms from Rangdum. The Zanskar road winds down to the Stod Valley, the majestic "Drang Drung" glacier 100 mts. This is the long and winding river of ice and snow, the largest glacier in Ladakh.
The main Himalaya composes the isolated region of Zanskar of a number of small mountain locekd valleys to the south of Ladakh. The valleys are bounded to the north by the Zanskar range and to the south. to the east and west, high ridges linking the Himalaya and Zanskar mountains ensure that there is no easy connection between Zanskar and the outside world. Zanskar essentially comprises the Stod Valley in the west and the Lunak Valley in the east, which converge at Padum, the administrative centre of the region.
Zanskar comprises a tri-armed valley system - west, north and south lying between the great Himalayan range and the Zanskar mountains with the central expanse a boding then Zanskar river. the region's 10000 strong buddhist population lives over an estimated geographical area of 5000 sq.kms. The area remains closed for nearly 8 months a year due to heavy rainfall and closure of the Penzi-La. Within the mountain ramparts of this lost Shangri-La stand a number of ancient yet active monastic establishments.
