Visit To Lakshadweep

The islands of Lakshadweep - the country's only Coral Islands lie in the Arabian sea towards the west, off the coast of Kerala. The palm covered islands of Lakshadweep add upto only 32 sq.Kms scattered around 4,200 sq.km of lagoon waters. The archipelago lies 300 kms west of Kerela, and is divided into the northern Amindivi group, the Laccadive group and the isolated Minicoy in the south.

Out of the 36 islands comprising the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, only 10 of the 35 islands are inhabited, not including the resort island of Bangaram. These are Andrott, Amini, Agatti, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavarati, Kiltan and Minicoy. Malayalam is the main language, but the southern most island of Minicoy speaks Mahl, which is also spoken in the neighbouring Maldives.

Fishing and coir production are the main economic activities. A caste system divides the islanders between Koya (land owners), Malmi (sailors) and Melachery (farmers). The islands of Kavarati, Kalpeni, Kadmat, Minicoy, Cheriyam, and Thinakara are open to Indian tourists only. Bangaram, uninhabited island, is open both Indian and foreign tourists. During the monsoon from mid May to mid September, the islands are closed to tourists.
