The new state of Chattisgarh came into existence in November 2000, with the city of Raipur as its capital. Chattisgarh is spread over an area of 1,35,194, sq.kms and comprises of sixteen districts of Koriya, Surguja and Jashournagar to the north, Korba, Bilaspur, Jangir Chhampa and Raigarh in the North Central, Kawardah, Rajnundgaon, Durg, Rajpur, Dhmatari, and Mahasamund in the centre and Bastar Kanker, and Dantewara in the South. The state is carved out of 30.49 percent of the land area and 26.6 percent of the population of the undivided Madhya Pradesh. The state has 20378 villages of which 19,720 are inhabited villages. The largest concentration of population for the state is in the districts in the central and north central parts especially Raipur, Durg, Bilaspur, and Surguja. The rural population is 28.6 percent of the total undivided Madhya Pradesh
Chattisgarh abouds with the hilly regions and plains. Uttar Pradesh to the north, Jarkhand to the north east, Orrisa to the east, Andhra Pradesh to south-east and south, Maharashtra to the south-west, Madhya Pradesh to the west and north-west form its boundaries. The climate is mainly tropical, humid and sub-humid. It receives an annual average rainfall of 60 inches. The state is completely dependent on monsoon for rains and its main crop is rice. Mahanadi is the main river of the state. Other major rivers are Sheonath, Hadeo, Mand, Eeb, Pairi, Jonk, Kelo Udanti, Indrawati, Arpa and Manyari. The forest covering the state is 44% of the total area. Chattisgarh is famous in the entire country for its Sal forests.
Major places of tourist interests are Rajini, Champaranya, Sirpur, Ratanpur, Bhilai, Dongargarh, Arang, Mainpet, Malhar, Tala, Bhoramdeo, Bheemlboj (Khallari), Water falls of Chitrakoot, Teerathgarh, Mandra, Chitradhara, Tamda Doonar, caves at Kotamsar Kailash, Aranyak, Sakal Narayan, Tular, Rani, Makar, Kanak and Doongare Dantewada, Keshkal Valley, Charama Valley, Kanges National Park, Indravati National Park etc.Other National Parks are at Sanjay, Badalkhol, Barnawapara, Seetanadi, Achanakmar, Semarsot, Tamorpindla, Bhaiamgarh, Pamed, Udanti and Gomrade.
