Sani Information, Kargil, Jammu and Kashmir
Sani, a village is located at 6ms to the west of Padum on the road to Kargil. The chief attraction here is the castle like monastery, founded by Kanishka on account of the Kanika stupa inside the complex. Frescoes adorned with Thankas, rock carving surrounding the old cemetry, statues of Buddhist divinities and durgapa high saints are attractions here.
Sani is also associated with Naropa, the famous Indian Yogi from Vikramsila, who meditated under the Kanika Stupa. The bronze figure of the yogi which is unveiled once a year inlate july leads to a 2 day festival and celebrated with Bardan Monastery monks performing masked dances as ritual offering.
