Gompa Tsemo is one of the royal monasteries built in the 15th century and located near the palace. It is knowbn for its two storeyed statue of Chamb Buddha in a sitting posture.

It is a strenuos walk north of the city and has a colossal two-storey high image of Maitreya, flanked by figures of Avalokitesvara (right) and Manjusri (left). The Namgyal rulers founded it and a portrait of Tashi Namgyal hangs on the left of the entrance.
