The drive to Sonmarg is through another spectacular facet of Kashmir - the Sindh Valley. Sonmarg which means meadow of gold has as its backdrop snowy mountains against a cerulan sky. The Sindgh meanders along here and abouds with trout and mahseer. Ponies can be hired for the trip upto Thajiwas glacier, a major attraction during the summer months. Sonmarg (Path of Gold) is the last major town in Kashmir before the Zoji La and Ladakh.
Sonmarg is the starting point of a major trek passing several mountain lakes Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal. One can trek all the way to Amarnath cave. The other reason for Sonmarg's importance lies in the fact that it is the last halt on the Kashmir side for the drive from Srinagar to Leh. Sonmarg's accomodation consists of JKDTC bungalows that dot its hill sides.
