Sankoo Infirmation, Kargil, Jammu and Kashmir
Sankoo is an upcoming township with a small bazaar, surrounded by rocky mountains. Dense plantation of poplars, willows, myricarea and wild roses fill the bowl shaped valley, giving it the ambience of a man made forest. The tributaries of Suru river, the Kartse and the Nakpochu open upon either side of the expanse Kartse - Khar and the ancient village near the mouth of Kartse valley, has a 7 mts. tall rock sculpture of future Budhha.
This is a good starting point fora trek. The popular 4 day treks from here include sankoo and Mulbekh passes through Rusila and the Safila, the 3-day trek to Drass across the UmbalLa, the trek routes are dotted with colourful wild flowers during the summer. Sankoo is popular for its ancient shrine of a Muslim scholar Saint - Sayed Mir Hashim, who imported religious teachings to the region's Buddhist rule - Thi Namgyal of the suru principality. It is located in the village of Karpo Khar.
