National Museum is one of the best Museums in India. The collection was formed from the nucleus of the exhibition of the Indian Art (London). On Janpath and just south of the Rajpath, is the premium repository of antiquities. Built in 1960, it has an extraordinary collection of Indian bronze, terracotta, and wood sculptures dating back to the Mauryan period (2nd and 3rd century BC) exhibits from the Vijayanagar period in SuthIndia, miniature and mural paintings ands costumes of the various adivasis (tribal people).

It represents the entire span of Indian civilization from pre-historic times. Its galleries includes finds from then Indus Valley Civilization, superb sculptures in stone and bronzes from the Chola period including the largest collection of miniature paintings in the world manuscripts. Next door is the Archaeological Survey of India office. Publication available here cover all tne main sites in India. Many of these are not available at the particual sites themselves. the office is opne from 9 am to 1 pm and 3.30 pm to 5pm (Monday to Friday).
