Jama Masjid

Visit To Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid - the largest mosque in India is 1 km to the west of Red Fort. It is the last great architectural work of Shah Jahanintended to dwarf all mosques that had gone before it. With the Red Fort it dominates Old Delhi. It began in 1644, the mosque was not completed until 1658. It has three gateways, four angle towers and two minarates standing 40 mts. high.

The Jama Masjid is much simpler in its ornamentation than Shah Jahan's secular buildings, a judicious blend of red sandstone and white marble, which are interspersed in the domes, minarates and cusped arches. All these features are intended to emphasize the architectural merits of the building rather than to merely acts as decoration. The courtyard of the mosque can hold 25000 people, with the views in all the directions being superb. There is also a fine view of the Red Fort from the east side of the mosque.
