Visit To India Gate
A tour of New Delhi starts with a visit to India Gate. This war memorial is situated at the eastern end of Rajpath. This 24 mts high, free standing arch was designed by the English architect Edwin Lutyens and built in 1931. It was originally called All India War Memorial - in the memory of 85,000 Indian army soldiers who died in World War I.
Under the arch is the Amar Jawan Jyoti, commemorating Indian armed forces in the Indo - Pak War of 1971. To the northwest of then India gate are two impressive buildings, Hyderabad House and Baroda House. Built as residences for the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Gaekwad of Beroda, they are now used as offices.
