Provincial Style Architecture

With the development of Islamic architecture in Delhi, several provincial styles with unique features grew by side in other parts of the country. The Multan School(Now of Pakistan) had some Indian features but was more Persian in spirit. The Islamic architecture of Bengal used the curved roof and carved surfaces of the region.

The Gujarat style is one of most outstanding examples of Indo-Islamic architecture. The jewel-like intricate carvings and the delicate tracery in the windows are some of its outstanding features. However the Hindu idiom here was so deep rooted that many of the Islamic features of Delhi monuments are missing.

The Malwa style of Dhar and Mandu shows instances of conversion of temples into mosques in the earlier period, but in the later period this powerful Afgan style has original characteristics making the monuments of Mandu, its palaces and pavilions some of the most outstanding in the region. The Khandesh style shows the influence of Gujarat and Malwa styles. The Jaunpur style has many monuments which are again markedly indigenous as Hindu architects are believed to have designed most of them.
