The aim of the Hindu being to break the chain of birth and rebirth, the first step is to perform one’s dharma or duties with righteousness, discipline and moral spiritual excellence .each person’s dharma or duty is different from that of another, depending on his occupation, moral and spiritual development, age and marital status. The division of four people into four castes or occupations was part of this concept of dharma.Caste,in early times was fluid, one’s caste depending on one’s qualities and occupation. However by the medieval ages, the caste became rigid with birth deciding the caste of the person.
Equally different are the duties performed in the four stages of one’s life,as a student,as a householder,in one’s later years(following a life of detachment) and for the few who we choose,a life of complete renunciation.
