Suru Valley is a fertile valley of immense beauty occupied by a population of Tibeto - Dard descent. One of the most beautiful regions of Ladakh, Suru Valley forms the main stay of the Kargil district. Nestled along the northeastern foothills of the great Himalayan wall, it extends from Kargil town, first southward fora lenght of 75 kms upto the expanse around Panikhar, thence eastward for 65 kms upto the foot of the Penzilla pan where the Suru river arises. Although immobilized in winter by heavy snowfall, its alluvial floor, verdant fields, watered by streams from surrounding mountains it serves as Ladakh's granary producing rich crops of wheat and barley.There being plenty of water for irrigation, the thick groves of willow and poplar trees give the area lushness are in Ladakh.
The upper reaches of the valley, Sankoo Bowl, The Pankhar expanse present a spectacle of breath taking features - snow capped mountain ramparts, foaming cascades of pristine water, glaciers, quaint villages, valleys of flowers with hundreds of varieties of wild plants blossoming tp spread a riot of colours in months of June and July. The beauty of this region is further enhanced by the sheer contrast provided by the towering peaks of Nun (7135 mts.) and Kun (7035 mts.) that tower over the skyline in their crystalline majesty.
Suru Valley offers some very good trekking and Kargil is the jumping off point for treks in this region. There is a road along the valley now but this can be avoided for large sections of the trek. The metalled part extends to Parachik, which is beyond Panikher. An unmetalled road runs over the Pensi La. the road to Padum is generally open by the beginning of July.
