South India comprise of four states – Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka,TamilNadu and Kerala.They have successfully managed to retain their distinct identities. This inspite of constant exchange of ideas, people and culture from the north for well over 4000 years.
South India has its own cultural traditions in music, art, literature, architecture and cuisine. Predominantly vegetarian with rice as the staple the people look different and have different temperament when compared with their northern counterparts.Some of India’s greatest temple architecture can be found at the places like Madurai ,Thanjavur, Mamallapuram and many others, while the forts and the palaces add to the tourist attractions. Up in the Nilgiris are located some of the beautiful hill stations like Ooty, Kodiakannal, Coonoor in TamilNadu and Munnar and Periyar in Kerala.The hills of the south are a tea, coffee and spice growing region, while on the plain one finds rice and coconut as the major crops being grown.The region receives much of its water supply from the Cauvery,Krishna and Godavari rivers.
While Telugu,Kannada,Tamil and Malayalam are the main regional languages being spoken – Hindi during the past couple of decades is being understood in many areas, thanks to the profusion of the Hindi cinema. English is understood and spoken mainly in the urban sectors.
