Purana Qila (Old Fort)is located to the south-east of India Gate and north of humayun's tomb and Nizamuddin train station. This is the supposed site of the Indraprasth, the original city of Delhi. The Afghna ruler - Sher Shah, who briefly interrupted the Mughal sovereignty by defeating Humayun, completed the fort during his reign from 1538 to 1545, before humayun regained control of India.
The Fort has massive walls and three large gateways. Just behind it is the the Qila-i-Kuhran Mosque or Mosque of Sher Shah. Other attractions are sher Mandal, a small archaeological museum and a sound and light show each evening. A massive double storeyed Bara Darwaza (Great Gate) is the main entrance to the fort. The south gate is known as Humyaun Darwaza and the north is Talaqi Darwaza.
