Indian Temple Styles

Temple architecture can be roughly divided into three main types. The northern style known as the Nagara, the southern style, the Dravid and the third,The Chalukyan school of Karnataka which combines the features of both styles and spread to all the parts of the country, even as far as Gujarat, Rajasthan and Orissa. One of the earliest existing temples is at Sanchi (Madhya Pradesh) of the early Gupta period, almost Grecian in design, with a flat roof. The addition of a spire or shikhara to this pristine form may be seen in the Deogarh stone temple and the Bhitargaon brick temple (in Uttar Pradesh) dating back to the 6th century A.D.
